Pitt County AIDS Service Organization (PiCASO),is A non-profit organization dedicated to supporting people living with HIV/AIDS and slowing the spread of HIV.
PiCASO provides services to those in Pitt County infected with HIV. Those services include: Educational Services, Free Rapid HIV Testing, Case Management, Emergency Financial Assistance, Specialized Food Pantry, Housing Assistance, Transportation Assistance and Personal and Group Client Support.
Here are some HIV/AIDS stats: 3 million people died of AIDS last year. Everyday 14,000 people contract HIV; Most of those infected with HIV don’t know it. African Americans, teenagers, women and men who have sex with men have been highly affected by this health crisis.
In the United States, African Americans make up 54% of all new HIV infections each year. African American women make up 72% of all new HIV cases among women, with 75% obtaining HIV through unprotected sex with men and 25% through intravenous drug use. At least half of the people infected with HIV each year, are under the age of 25. 65% of all new AIDS cases are African American teens between the ages of 13-19.
