Eastern North Carolina Shag Club, Inc., ENCSC, is a nonprofit dance club founded in 1985 and is an active member of the Association of Carolina Shag Clubs. This mother organization is composed of over 100+ nonprofit shag clubs stretching from Baltimore to Miami. It has seen much westerly growth as fun-filled new shaggers embrace the lifestyle of perpetuating and preserving beach music, its dance, and the environment.

As of June 2008, 246 ENCSC members, ranging from 21 to 71 years of age, actively engage in North Carolina’s state dance of a 6 step basic, mirror dance to a post war rhythm and blues tune. We meet weekly on Sunday nights at the City Hotel and Bistro in Greenville for free beginner lessons at 5:00, followed by dancing to a member DJ from 6:00 to 10:00. Our monthly meetings are also held at the City Hotel and Bistro on the first Wednesday night of each month at 7:30 pm. The public is welcome to visit us during both events.

Most members live within a 50 mile radius of Greenville. Our membership goal for 2009 is 300+ members. As a social club, ENCSC offers multiple opportunities of fun, fellowship, leadership and community involvement. Scheduled annual local events include and are not limited to Labor Day Layover in September. This is a joint event with Sugar Foot Shag Club of Goldsboro and it will be held at Memories Beach Club in Atlantic Beach, N.C. Also in September, many ENCSC members will migrate to North Myrtle Beach for S.O.S (Shaggers On the Strand). Once there, they will join 10,000 other shaggers and their respective clubs to fellowship and dance. The Boulevard Grill party in Myrtle Beach was hosted by Moore Area Shag Society, Twin Rivers Shag Club of New Bern, Burlington Shag Club, Atlantic Beach Shag Club, and Eastern North Carolina Shag Club of Greenville. Shag-O-Ween, an October event is also a shared event with Sugar Foot and Johnston County Shag Club.

An annual Christmas and Valentine Party will be the winter events. We have another SOS road trip scheduled for The Spring to North Myrtle Beach. This is a 10 day “Adult Spring Break” with lots of dancing and even a parade! At year’s end, the annual Re-up River Picnic and Dance will occur in June. Life is full and it is good!

Membership into ENCSC is by a sponsored member only. Annual dues for all this fun is only $20.00 a year. Come on out to the City Hotel and Bistro to meet us. You may also go to our website at www.encshagclub.com for more information and an application to join. See ya on the dance floor!
