RE/MAX Realtor Pat Taylor writes about the role women play in home buying.

The antiquated notion that a “woman’s place is in the home” now has a more modern twist.

Women are finding their places in homes, all right, and in record numbers. But this time, they’re crossing the thresholds of single-family residences and spouses.

In fact, single women have been out-muscling single men as first-time home buyers at a rate of about two to one over the past half decade according to the National Association of Realtors.

Many dads are now staying home while the moms are pursuing their careers. Because of this, we see many more women making that big purchase when it comes to buying a home. They have the income and job stability to get the mortgage for a home.

Women need a sense of financial security and they obviously see a home as a sound investment too.

Setting the stage, several changes have been in the lending institute to help women in pursuing financing for a home. These include the relaxation of underwriting/down-payment requirements for home purchases and even the FHA’s push to allow single parents to count child support as income. Low interest rates and low down-payment programs also contribute to the trend of women purchasing homes.

If you are thinking of buying a home, consult with your local Realtor and a mortgage lender today. They can help you with the home buying process and inform you on what type of programs are available for your new home.  There is no cost to you!

“Because women are living longer, their need for future financial stability is even more of a concern. Owning a home gives them that stability.”
